Adapting his film from the surprise Richard Adams best seller, director Martin Rosen dramatizes its dark theme of oppression ensnaring a warren of rabbits with expressive but unslick hand-drawn animation and sturdy voice work by a who's who of British actors (John Hurt, Ralph Richardson, Denholm Elliott, et al.). Despite its furry protagonists, this often bloody tale is not for kiddies. While the rabbits' struggle for freedom may be read as an allegory, the story can also be taken at face value; this world is its own completely realized one. © Copyright 2015.
